"Lessons Learned: Superstorm Sandy"
In the life of a DBA, we rarely get to experience an actual disaster. And by “actual disaster”, we aren’t just talking about an UPDATE without a WHERE clause on a live table. At the end of October 2012, Sandy ravaged much of the New Jersey/New York area, causing business impacts up and down the seaboard. In this talk, I’ll share experiences from my first disaster, covering what went well, what didn’t, and what we’ve put into place since to help in the future.
Brandon Tucker has explored SQL Server as a developer, administrator, and consultant over the last seven years. After graduating school, he has translated his academic knowledge base into real-world scenarios in the financial, health insurance, education, and transportation industries. Brandon has presented at Code Camps/User Groups in multiple states and served as VP of Events for the Denver SQL Server User Group from 2011-2012. When not pounding away on a keyboard, Brandon can be found wandering the globe in search of great music, beers, sights, and experiences.
Main Presentation
"SQL Server Maintenance Plans"
Most DBA’s know you need to be doing some form of maintenance on your databases: Backups, index rebuilding\reorganization, update statistics, integrity checks, and system cleanup. SQL Server offers some basic tasks to complete this needed maintenance. The session will cover setting up a maintenance plan including the tasks, schedules, and logging. From there, we will dive deeper into the basic task, find out what is going on behind the scene, and discuss when it is ok to use them and when you should create your own. At the end of the session you will know how to create a maintenance plan, how to log results and keep a history of success or failures, when you should use what SQL Server has provided and when you should create your own plan.
Kat Meadows has been consorting with SQL Server since 1998 in an effort to rid the world of select *s and db_owner rights for everyone. Over the years, Kat has successfully blazed a trail from manufacturing to dotcoms to military and government institutions, and is now back in the private sector. Currently, as a Senior DBA at Xtivia, she is focused on monitoring SQL Server installations and troubleshooting performance issues. Kat is also the President of the Colorado Springs SQL Server User Group, a tech-editor, and an awesome baker of all-things chocolate. Kat possesses a Bachelor's degree in Managing Information Systems from Colorado Technical University and a serious knack for finding those little database havoc-wreaking gremlins. |
